In Africa

Last updated 25 August 2000: A Letter!
[Insert roar of lion]

On Monday 15th May, I'm going to be leaving for Africa, to spend four months teaching in a Catholic Primary School in Uganda. I have asked Claire (aka Zed) to help with this website so that letters can be published on it and you can all find out how I'm getting on. This first section is to explain all about my trip.
Bug(ger) off! I am going with a company called Africa & Asia Venture. It is a small company that specializes in arranging placements in Africa and Asia for people taking a year out. They operate in four countries in Africa, and two in Asia. (Their website is here) The trip begins with a Safari, probably at Lake Turkana in northern Kenya, for all of the AV's who are going to be teaching in Kenya or Uganda. This is followed by an Orientation Course at Lake Naivasha in the Rift Valley, which is to teach us all about health precautions, teaching practices and security. We are then placed in pairs at each school. I am going with a girl called Emma and we will be working as Assistant teachers at a Girl's Primary Boarding School. It is a convent school with 670 girls aged between 7 and 14, and 20 teachers. I will be teaching Maths and Science. When term finishes we have two and a half weeks of scheduled travel time, before catching the flight home and heading off to University.

Love MiLLa
