By En So, what have we been up to this month (apart from setting up this website for all you good good people)? Well for starters we met each other. We’re freshers y’see – timid little beings venturing out into the big, wide world only to discover that it was the world that was not ready for us (“You scare me” said M from Computer Science). We’ve also managed to scare a quiet but nice guy from my Economics lectures that we refer to as Mr Silent. He was present when we were writing some of our dirty, alternative lyrics to Christmas carols. I met Ell when I decided to walk into that campus eaterie, “The Lighthouse”, on my own in a bold attempt to ACTUALLY MEET SOME PEOPLE. There I met her, Mr Silent and some friendly 2nd year girls. Then I kept bumping into her in the Eliot Dining Hall & had loads of really long conversations with her. From then on we could never shut up. I met Zed when I was trying to put my evil computer on the University network. I found her at the Computer Helpdesk in the library & she helped me sort my computer out. At first I thought she was one of the staff. I discovered this was not the case when I bumped into her again in one of the dining halls. We talked and talked and talked and talked and I then introduced her to Ell. We bonded on the topics mentioned in Introducing. We all like watching films and we’ve already seen loads since we’ve been here (Butterfly’s Tongue, House Of Mirth, Dr Zhivago, Billy Elliot (quality film, that) and Not One Less). After seeing House Of Mirth with Ell (at the Kent International Film Festival), I’ve discovered that she has a thing about men in Edwardian dress (no, not AN Edwardian dress!) because “they look so manly”. We also think the restraint that the lovers in the film show is quite sexy because that is so rare in modern films & we sometimes like to use our imagination. She may yet convert me to costume dramas. As a film, House Of Mirth was a bit slow-moving but has a great story and superb acting. It stars Gillian Anderson, Eric Stoltz and Dan Ackroyd. Gillian deservedly won Best Actress Award for this at the British Independent Film Festival. Ell & I thought that Billy Elliot was fantastic. It’s one of those films that leaves you with a silly grin on your face. It makes you laugh, cry & ahhhhh-bless (if you’re a soppy git like me) in equal amounts. It’s become one of my all-time favourites. Obviously we’ve met some other people apart from each other and Mr Silent, such as B (once met, never forgotten), the legendary R (the head banging Champagne connoisseur with razor-sharp wit) & many other people too numerous to mention but I’m sure will be at some point. Zed persuaded me & En to go to a Rock Society party over in Keynes with her. Ell got into head-banging straightaway. She always gets into the spirit of whatever she’s doing due to her complete lack of inhibition – sometimes possessing such a trait can be quite handy. At first I felt like a bit of a twat seeing as don’t really dress like or feel like a rocker (“internalising the role” - eek, Intro to Law is getting to me). As O (my buddy from law lectures) said “I can’t really imagine you head-banging”. However, once I started to loosen up a bit I had a really good time as did my fellow sisters. The only slightly worrying thing was that my ears were ringing for 2 days afterwards. In case you’re wondering what Canterbury is like, I’m glad to say that it’s a lovely town. OK, it isn’t the centre of the clubbing universe but we don’t care. It’s got good shops (including quirky shops, old-fashioned sweetie shops and bookshops), lots of greenery and (drum-roll, please) the magnificent cathedral. It’s also close to the rest of Europe and so we can quite easily pop over to France and many other places for the weekend. Then came the Becket Court party attended by me, Ell & anyone vaguely associated with that wonderful area of accommodation. Considering that it was organised spontaneously (a contradiction in terms, surely), it went reasonably well. My next door neighbour, K, had only 3 catchphrases that evening & by the end, she made sure that everyone knew who “German Dave” was (you’d have had to have been in a coma not to). K, S-J (another fellow B.C girl) and I were doing the groovy dance moves for “I think we’re alone now” by Tiffany & “It’s Raining Men” by The Weather Girls (our B.C anthems). On Halloween I had my evening hijacked by Zed & R - all I can say is thanks you guys, it was truly appreciated. Earlier that day I was not in the best of moods & was going to spend the evening doing some studying that really wasn't that urgent anyway. That night I went over to visit Zed when she was getting ready for the Rock Society pub crawl. I hadn't planned to go at all - I hadn't had any dinner, was still clutching my UKC rucksack containing my Maths textbook & was not wearing the (almost) obligatory head-to-toe black clothing. However, Zed & R can be very persuasive when they want to be & so thanks to them, I ended up having a great time. Anyway, so long & farewell for I really need some sleep. Byeeeeeeee, En xxx P.S K, I did NOT want you to e-mail me nude pictures of those men. It’s inappropriate behaviour – and besides, they aren’t even sexy. I go for quality in case you hadn’t noticed! And e-mailing them to P to make him squirm is just plain sadistic....
